Venetian Truck Driving Skills

Via our foodie friends at Venice Bites:

That’s pretty cool–navigating a barge around those old, narrow canals and low hanging bridges.  Everything you see in Venice’s quiet neighborhood shops and restaurants arrives in this manner; deliveries require these guys and their unique boat maneuvering skill sets.

I’ll bet none of these guys are getting rich, but none of them would give up what they do for a living either.  One of the more unique jobs in the world.

Lagoon Sunset Views

I was kicking myself for not having lugged the tripod with me to Burano this day; I would have shot these with HDR for a more dramatic contrast with the Venice buildings, campanile, and rooflines that sit under this dramatic sunset.  But in retrospect that’s a “happy accident”, as the slight silhouetting I think emphasizes the romantic, mysterious qualities of Venice at night and in the evening.

These were shot at f5.6, 1/800th, between 260mm and 300mm depending.  Any time you can watch the sunset on Burano, you know it’s good to be alive.

Artisanal Genius

We agree with OG Venice:  this is mesmerizing to watch.  Even more so in person!

Burano and Bodypaint

This is fantastic work!  The artist painted dancers to match Burano houses; in a couple, you have to look for a second to find the person!  Some mild, painted-over artistic nudity is present in the link.  Slight possibility of NSFW, depending.

Zanipolo

One of our favorite spots in Venice at night is where Cannaregio and Castello come together, the quiet campo in front of Zanipolo.  Zanipolo is the Venetian dialect slurring together “Santi Giovanni e Paolo.”

Venice *is* a Land of Culinary Treasures

Just some of the delights waiting for you in the Veneto.  You’ll often read on sites like TripAdvisor folks complaining about the food in Venice, and invariably it really is just a matter of not knowing where to look for the good stuff and failure to get away from the tourist traps.  Don’t miss out on the culinary experience of a lifetime when you’re there–let us help you get to “the real deal!”

Cannaregio Canal

We usually think of darkness, fog, rain, mist, night as things that conceal and foster mystery.  That calculus is turned on its head in Venice, where night and weather reveal the mystery, the romance rather than obscure them.

Burano, a Tramonto

sunsetburano_66

The vaporetto ride back from Burano to Fondmenta Nuove is always a bit wistful–Burano is the sort of place where you want to buy a small house and take up life as a fisherman just so you can wake up there.  But sunsets like this make it a bit easier to accept!
