Winemaking Art

The art is definitely found in the glass, but not only in the glass.  Walking around an Italian wine producing house,  you’re struck by how ubiquitous, how ever-present the beauty can be.  Even something as simple as the results of a de-stemming process can captivate.

Langhe Leaves in Autumn

Fireworks courtesy of Luca Aimasso’s Barbera post harvest, near Diano D’Alba.  You have to see them in person to fully appreciate, but here’s a good way to tide yourself over until you can visit Piemonte yourself.

Visiting La Morra: A Tasting With Oddero

Poderi e Cantine Oddero is one of the most well known classic Piemonte wine producers; the Oddero family are warm hosts with an amazing product that evolves in the glass as you taste, whether it’s the Gallina Barbaresco, a single vineyard Barolo, or a blended one.  Great wines, and an amazing location that really popped on the camera as the sun poked through the clouds.  The best part was definitely getting to do a vertical tasting across a few different vintages of the Bussia (single vineyard Barolo).  A bottle of the 2007 certainly found its way home with us, and will quit getting any older when Doug comes to visit Colorado this winter.

Kaskal–Sparkling Nebbiolo!

We were among the first Americans to get to try this sparkling version of nebbiolo that Rivetto said was already sold out (sorry, none of it was available here in the US…guess we’ll have to go to Piemonte and get more) last year.  Hopefully some of this years batch will still be available when we’re wine buying our way through the Langhe next month.  Can’t wait to see what he’s done with it.

For more on the lovely Sinio and a feel for how awesome a visit a trip to Rivetto is, see here:

The Langhe in 24 Hours? Here’s How.

A compelling how-to if you’re fortunate enough to get to go to Piemonte, but sadly only have a day in which to do it.  Get thee a designated driver, and start tasting!

Wine Friday is Dolcetto Day

Found some Mossio Dolcetto d’Alba thanks to our friends at K&L Wines in San Francisco.  We need to find Valerio and company more distribution in the US!  They certainly deserve it, and so does the discerning Piemontese wine consumer.  Excited to try the Abbona as well!

How To Explore Piemonte Wines: Guest Post with Valerie Q!

Thanks much to our friend Valerie Quintanilla for the chance to guest write a post on good entry wines for people looking to learn about the wonders of “vini Piemontese.”

Giribaldi Corks

We can’t all walk down to the higher end wine store and plunk down $275 for a bottle of Gaja’s latest release Barbarescos and Barolos to squirrel away in the wine cellar, but anyone can approach these wines and appreciate them now, with dinner tonight in fact.  (Indeed, if you filled a case with these wines, you still wouldn’t spend $275!)
