This Blog Is Why The Internet Is Good

So glad Lesley saw and liked one of my posts!  It gave me chance to read about (and be very, very jealous of) her travel adventures and her commendable wanderlust.   Check out her blog and read up on her approach.

The insular world we live in is getting less so thanks to the Internet, but it’s still so darn mission-critical to actually GET OUT AND TRAVEL, and she’s encouraging people to do it.  Leading by example!

Go give her page a follow/like!

Some good observations here. Relax and enjoy your Italy time!

We have all seen the movies with the Tuscan vineyards, the olive trees growing along the side of the road and the pace of life that almost seems to stand still. I was so scared that this bubble was about burst, but I got so much more than I expected.

We had a week school break at the end of February and I was on the first train possible to Florence, Tuscany. I was like a kid on Christmas eve. I’ve only heard about how pretty Florence’s was but it’s one of those place you have to see it to really appreciate it. There is something magical about Tuscany and it’s people and before I knew it I was in love with this wine region of Italy. There was no point in fighting it, and I didn’t want to, because I was oh so happy!!! So I decided that this…

Fracturing in the EU

Fracturing in the EU

Turmoil in the EU.  As noted, it’s unlikely this can carry on unabated much longer.  I’ll be curious to see what comes of this for the travel biz.  While I suspect our dollars will go further as the euro takes a beating, who knows what sort of levies will be enacted to try to prop up the Italian economy.

It’s not like you can bail out the 8th largest economy in the world and still have your currency mean anything.

Bottarga

Bottarga

Mmm…Mama Isa’s spaghetti alla Bottarga: one of those ingredients I wish we could source here in the US. Well, you can order it online…but it ain’t cheap. Might be a good splurge item for those wanting something a bit off the beaten culinary path.

Street Entertainment in Rome

Doug Sassi captured this impromptu street performer working for tips outside a cafe in Roma where the small tour group was catching a quick lunch. Pretty funny stuff.

Well…maybe if you walk down that street daily you don’t find his Harpo Marx routine all that entertaining, but I’ve seen this guy’s videos…he finds preoccupied people and spoofs the heck out of their haughtiness.

The flavor of Rome!

Carbonara

Carbonara

Check out Mama Isa’s carbonara recipe. It might be sacrilegious but I make a vegetarian version with fake bacon that works out just fine (I crisp it in oil with some garlic and shallots and it tastes plenty rich).

Super Mario!

Super Mario!

What a goal.  What touch!

Brazil:  I’m no expert, but I’m guessing four defenders camping around Balotelli waiting for the other guy to press the attack at the top of the box isn’t a good strategy.

Steve McQueen

Steve McQueen

One last bit of Raphael’s (the modern one, not the Renaissance one) talent tonight. If you’re even a little bit interested in learning how to *really* progress in your renderings of living subjects, you need to seek his instruction.

Puerto Rico, Old San Juan and Castillo San Felipe del Morro.

Some non-Italy content if you’ll permit me…great shots of San Juan and the rainforest on Mike’s blog.  This winter weather is making me miss sunny PR.
